Mrs. Millis

Mrs. Millis

Hello! My name is Cala Millis and I am one of the 5th grade teachers at Carpenter. This is my 3rd year at Carpenter, and my 12th year teaching. I have taught everything from preschool to high school, in 4 states and 2 countries over the past decade, moving to Ann Arbor 5 years ago. I have a BA in Early Childhood Education from DePaul University and a Masters in Program Evaluation and Assessment from UM-Dearborn. I love using assessment and data with students to help them set and reach their goals!

When I am not in the classroom, I enjoy baking, reading, or being outside in nature. I love hiking and camping in the UP or out west in the mountains.  My husband and I have two cats and a dog, Bowie, who often joins us on our hikes. Our goal is to visit all 63 National Parks, and so far we have hiked in 20 of them.

I am looking forward to working with 5th graders again this year, and hope to instill a love of learning in our students and set them up for success in all they strive for. I work to create a positive and inclusive classroom environment in which all students feel safe and confident to take risks in learning. I hope each student finishes this school year feeling like a valued member of our community and confident in their abilities. I believe it takes a team to support students in reaching their goals, including the wonderful staff here at Carpenter, and also students' families. Families are a child's first teacher, and I enjoy partnering with families throughout the year to provide the best instruction and learning experience for your child.

Excited for a fantastic year!
